Stress can affect several systems in the body. This leads many people to ask: Can stress cause thyroid problems?

Stress can interact with thyroid function, but it is not the only cause of thyroid disease.

The thyroid gland produces hormones that help regulate metabolism, energy, body temperature and other important functions. Long-term stress may affect hormone regulation and immune function. In some people, it may influence autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease.

However, stress should not be considered the sole cause of thyroid problems.

Symptoms to watch for

Thyroid problems may cause:

  • Persistent tiredness
  • Unexplained weight changes
  • Mood changes or anxiety
  • Feeling unusually cold or hot
  • Sleep problems
  • Changes in heart rate
  • Neck swelling

These symptoms can occur due to several health conditions. Do not assume that every symptom is caused by stress.

How is thyroid function checked?

A TSH blood test is commonly used as an initial test to check thyroid function. Depending on your symptoms, your doctor may also recommend Free T4, thyroid antibody tests or other investigations.

Stress management, adequate sleep, regular physical activity and a balanced lifestyle are important for overall health. But if symptoms continue, proper thyroid evaluation is also important.

Do not self-diagnose. Persistent thyroid symptoms should be evaluated by a doctor.
