Recovery after surgery isn't only about medicines and rest. Nutrition also plays an important role in helping your body repair tissues, maintain strength and support wound healing.

So, what should you eat after surgery?

1. Prioritise Protein

Protein provides building blocks needed for tissue repair and maintaining muscle during recovery.

Include foods such as eggs, fish, chicken, milk, curd/yogurt, paneer, dal, beans, lentils, soy and nuts, according to your dietary preferences and your doctor's advice.

2. Don't Forget Fruits & Vegetables

A varied diet provides vitamins and minerals involved in healing. Vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits and vegetables can be useful as part of a balanced diet, while iron and zinc also contribute to normal healing processes.

3. Stay Hydrated

Adequate fluids help prevent dehydration during recovery. Your exact fluid needs may vary depending on your surgery and medical conditions, so follow your healthcare team's advice.

4. Include Fibre When Appropriate

Constipation can be a problem after surgery, particularly with reduced activity or certain pain medicines. Fibre-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses can help—but some abdominal or gastrointestinal surgeries require temporary dietary modifications, so follow your surgeon's instructions.

5. Don't Crash-Diet While Healing

After surgery, severely restricting food can make it harder to maintain muscle and provide the nutrients your body needs for recovery. If appetite is low, smaller, more frequent meals may be easier to manage.

Remember: There isn't one universal post-surgery diet. The right diet depends on the type of surgery, your medical conditions and how your recovery is progressing.
